Jazz Bands

2023-2024 Recap

At Indian Hills, Jazz 2 placed second among Second Bands while Jazz 1 tied for third place in 3A but was awarded fourth on a tiebreaker. Drake Landau, guitar and Jolynn Keomanivong, tenor sax, were recognized for outstanding musicianship. At Coe Jazz 2 placed third among Second Bands. At SEIBA District, Garrett Landau, keyboard, Jahmal Dodson, trumpet, along with Jolynn Keomanivong and Drake Landau were recognized for outstanding solos.

2022-2023 Recap

At Indian Hills, Jazz 1 placed third in 3A and Jazz 2 placed second in the Second Bands category. Mt. Pleasant's Outstanding Musicianship Awards went to: Jazz 2: Addison Bentler, trumpet; Jazz 1: Drake Landau, guitar; Brandon Burtlow, flugelhorn; Ethan Sexauer, vibraphone, Bryce Wilson, drums; Danny Muhs, trombone. At the SEIBA District Jazz Festival, Jazz 1 placed third in 3A and Jazz 2 placed second in the Second Bands Category. Neither band placed at Coe and bad weather prevented them from traveling to Tallcorn in Cedar Falls.

 

2021-2022 Recap

At the Tallcorn Jazz Festival, Ethan Sexauer (violin) and Drake Landau (guitar) were named Outstanding soloists in 3A. We were not able to participate in the Coe Jazz Summit due to weather and Indian Hills JazzFest was not held. At SEIBA District, Jazz 2 placed third and Jazz 1 second in 3A, automatically qualifying Jazz 1 for State Jazz Championships. Drake Landau was named Outstanding 3A Soloist. Elijah Rynders, tenor sax, was chosen Outstanding Soloist in 3A Second Bands.

2020-2021 Recap

At the 2021 Indian Hills JazzFest, Jazz 1 placed First and Jazz 2 Second among Second Bands. Jazz 1 video here. Jazz 2 video here. Complete results can be viewed here.

 

The Iowa Jazz Championships board of directors and co-chairs voted on December 16 to unfortunately cancel the 2021 IJC scheduled for April 6. SEIBA District contest on March 6 in Iowa City also canceled due to COVID concerns.

 

2019-2020 Recap

Congratulations to Jazz 1 for once again qualifying for the 2020 State Jazz Championships ( which ended up canceled due to COVID-19)

Jazz 1 placed seventh out of 15 3A bands at the  2019 State Jazz Championships in Ames on April 2.

​

Jazz 1 placed First in 3A at the SEIBA District Jazz Festival, thus punching their ticket to the State Championships. Jazz 2 finished Second in their category. Annika Rynders was chosen Outstanding Soloist in 3A.   video​

At Indian Hills, Jazz 1 placed First in 3A and Jazz 2 Second in the Second Bands Category. Outstanding Musicianship Awards went to  Jonathan Myers (trumpet), Drake Snavely (tenor sax), Luke Ryon (bari-sax), Kionna Parrish (trumpet), Callie DePriest (alto sax & vocal), Lucas Lee (flugelhorn), Garrett Maddy (tenor sax), Annika Rynders (alto/soprano sax) and Paige Stater (alto sax).  Jazz 2 video​

At Coe College, Jazz 2 placed Second in the 3A Second Bands Division with Kionna Parrish receiving Honorable Mention Musician award.   results


Jazz 1 placed third behind first place Xavier and Carlisle at Tallcorn in Cedar Falls.

Past History: Jazz 1 has qualified numerous times for the State Jazz Championships over the years, placing in the top eight out of 15 qualifying bands in the following years: 2009 (7th place); 2010 (8th); 2015 (7th); 2016 (5th); 2017 (6th); 2019 (7th).
